Right brain education is about having children develop more imagination, sensitivity, creativity and intuition rather than focusing on academic achievements, knowledge and logics alone.
There are several methods of the right brain education, the method Shichida is most known. Right brain education principles are based on a sense of cooperation, love, and oneness.
How does it work?
Left brain education focuses on logic and uses confrontation and competition to ignite the need for knowledge and development.
According to Professor Shichida (founder of the “Shichida Method”), every child of ages 0 to 3 years old is able to absorb and process information amazingly fast.
The most important thing in the beginning of a child’s education is gaining vocabulary for language development. Using flashcards is one of most important things for developing language, child increases the interest in learning when sees and hears so many different objects, animals etc.
Flashing the cards at a fast speed children will learn very quickly. Stop when the child gets distracted and turns away the head. DO Not continue or insist on looking and listening when the attention of the child is lost.
Which Part of Brain is Most Important?
Both sides of the brain function very differently. Having an equal importance as they conduct different functions.
The right brain functions at a high speed, where the left brain functions at a low speed. So when inputting a lot of information at a very fast speed, you activate the right brain.
Left Brain
Right Brain
- Process Data One Piece At A Time
- Short-Term Memory
- Slow Input
- Conscious Awareness
- Logical Thinking
- Detail Analysis
- Practical, Works Well Undress Stress
- Relies On Physical Senses
- Likes Repetitive Inputs
- Uses Words List
- Uses Picture, Numbers and Shapes Images
- Process Data All At Once
- Long-term Memory
- Fast Input
- Subconscious Awareness
- Abstract Thinking
- Gestalt (whole picture)
- Emotional, Works Well When Relaxed
- Relies On Intuition
- Soaks Up Information Like Sponge
- Uses Picture, Numbers and Shapes
How to start developing the right brain for children?
One of the most important things before starting out right brain development is the relationship between you and your child. Your child has to feel loved and respected.
The child will grow and develop according to how is being treated, the way you communicate, and how they feel the parent’s attitude towards him/her.
It is advised to start right brain development from as young as possible, usually, it can be at 1 year old and up. Some find it more efficient closer to the age of 2, however, it all depends on child and parents.
How to make the toddler listen?
It is advised to hug your child for 8 seconds at least 4 times a day and it should be done from the bottom of your heart not that you must, it will create a strong bond, and child will feel more secure, and be more open to listening and learning.
The activities should always be done in the form of gameplay. In an interactive way so that the child doesn’t really feel stressed about its progress or process itself. Make it fun and positive.
What you should avoid doing
When the child makes a mistake, DO NOT think or say anything negative. Instead of “No this is not correct !”, say something like ‘ You did well, but it’s better done like this” and show them, instead of demanding child to figure out himself.
However do not exaggerate by showing how things work too often and in abundance, as it will create a veil of tension in a class instead of fun activity.
Words get ‘materialized’ and impact on your child. The child will be what you think and say of him/her. Instead, look at his/her strong points and potential.
Know that every child develops at its own pace and put no pressure on him.
If the child loses attention during an activity is advised to stop the activity without trying to turn the child’s attention back to the activities. Best is to take a short break, postpone it for later or to the next day.
Otherwise, you risk making the child dislike your activities time as he perceives it as an obstruction to receive happiness from doing things he/she wanted to switch to at that moment.
Avoid being perfectionist, there should always be a balance, thus do not go to extremities. And most important NEVER compare! Every child is different and has its own strengths.
Don’t focus on academic achievements, and do not expect immediate results.
Right Brain Development Activities
So you mus wonder what activities trigger the right brain development.
In Shichida classes, flashcards are not the only tools used, there are other right brain activities such as:
